Luke's extensive experience and passion for training and coaching has resulted in not only individual and teams representing New Zealand in the Reebok CrossFit Australasian/Pacific Games over the past seven years, but Mount CrossFit has represented New Zealand, more than any other gym/affiliate at the Australasian/Pacific Regionals.

Luke McGruer (Lukey) level 2 CrossFit trainer

Luke joined the Army in 2003. After 6 months of training, he was sent to the 1st Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (1RNZIR) based down in Linton, Palmerston North, NZ. Soon after being posted, he conducted his Reconnaissance Patrol Procedures and held various positions as a Recon and Sniper member.

Although this job was amazing, Luke started to get the “fitness bug” and transferred down to the military gym where he spent 4 years studying different training systems and methods to help soldiers and civilians “get fit”.




In April 2008, Luke completed his Primary Physical Fitness training and headed back to gather real experience training others. In 2010 he completed his Advance Physical Fitness training course and became an Advanced Physical Fitness Instructor. In 2010, he found CrossFit and began to use it as his primary training method. He completed his Level One CrossFit instructor certification and in 2011 he completed his CrossFit Endurance certification and Australian Club and National Olympic Weightlifting/Powerlifting coaches certifications. In 2012, he completed his International Kettlebell and Fitness Federation (IKFF) instructor certification and his CrossFit Football certification. in 2014 Luke started studying nutrition under Cliff Harvey, a clinical nutritionist and naturopath who founded the course Holistic Performance Nutrition. Luke has also completed his CrossFit level 2 trainers this year, 2016.

Kevin Manuel (Kev)

Kev is New Zealand's number one CrossFit athlete for his devision (open males), he has always been into sports and fitness. He started playing sports at the age of 5 and has tried most of them.  Just after high school he made the Hawkes bay rugby academy and was selected for the under 21 team.
In 2010, Kev found CrossFit. After doing his first Competition later that year he was hooked. Kev qualified for regionals in 2011 but didn't go because of how new he was to the sport. Since then Kev has placed 11th in 2012, 5 in 2013 and 2014 and 4th in 2015 at the pacific regionals. This managed to secure Kev a spot at the 2015 Reebok Crossfit Games, the first ever New Zealand open male competitor.
"Fitness and health is truly my passion and I love helping other people also accomplish their goals. It's a fantastic journey with huge reward if your willing to do the work. Kev is part owner in all our clubs".

James Roberts (Jimi) level 1 CrossFit trainer

Jimi no doubt has the best playlists at the box but there's a lot more to him then sweet beats 

Jimi has been a part of Mount Crossfit since 2014. He initially started his journey in Crossfit in 2013 as an alternative training method for Rugby. After 15 years of rugby he decided to 'hang up his boots' and look towards the future of helping other people reach their own health and fitness goals through Crossfit. 

Jimi has completed his CrossFit Level One Certificate, Certificate in Fitness Level 3 & 4 at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, and it studying towards a Sports and Leisure Degree at the University of Waikato & AUT. With over 12 years industry experience Jimi has been a trainer at Te Pare a Ruahine (BOP Poly) & Studio Active in Putaruru. He also has extensive experience teaching and coaching children in the role as a Youth Development Coordinator at both Strathmore & David Henry Primary Schools in Tokoroa and has held the position of Sports Coordinator at St Pius Primary School in Hamilton.

Sporting achievements in Rugby & Crossfit include playing many year for his clubs Te Puke Sports (BOP) & Hautapu (Waikato) representing both Bay of Plenty & Waikato in Maori, Development & 7's. As a Crossfit athlete he has qualified for multiple competitions BOF, P4P, IA Invitational and was also part of the 2017 MountCrossfit Team to Pacific Regionals. 

Jimi is passionate about CrossFit because each and everyday he coaches he gets to do what he loves the most. To help people become the better version of themselves.




Katie Robertson (Katie) level 1 CrossFit trainer

Katie has been working in the fitness industry since 2010, with a keen passion for fitness that started as a teenager when she represented NZ for swimming. 

After finishing school she went on to complete a diploma in exercise prescription and sport management, which lead her into running her own personal training business in Wellington. During this time she was introduced to CrossFit and in 2014 went on to open and run CrossFit FRF in Wellington.

Katie loves to help people by looking at all aspects of sport including goal setting, mental game and programing. Because CrossFit is for all types of people, Katie supports all athletes no matter what their goals are. This could be people that want to be competitive but also those who want to be fitter than they have ever been before.

Katie loves to compete at local CrossFit competitions as well as the feeling of trying to better herself everyday!

Shamay King (Shamay)

Through Shamays teenage years she represented New Zealand in many sports including swimming and surf lifesaving. Surf Life Saving is her main passion where she has competed all over the world including the world surf life saving titles held in France. 

Shamay holds a Bachelor of Sport Science and is interested in expanded her knowledge through the Strength and Conditioning field. While completing her degree she also progressed through an internship at Mount Crossfit and has moved onto becoming a coach. 

Helping people become healthier and fitter is a passion for her. She enjoys helping members with understanding biomechanics so they can improve their movement and reach their goals.



Abbie Ridge (Abbie)  level 1 CrossFit trainer

Abbie is our gymnastics specialist. She recently moved to New Zealand from the UK and is so excited to be a part of the Mount CrossFit community… "It felt like home the minute I stepped through the doors." Abbie has competed as a national level gymnast in the UK and as an individual and team medallist at the University BUCS championships, she has also competed at CrossFit at a national level.
