What is CrossFit?
At Mount CrossFit, we are a family first and a training facility second. Our goal is to make a friendly, healthy community where fitness becomes fun, you get the excitement of working out with your friends and family, while getting to train something different everyday. We do a mixture of strength, skills and conditioning in a way that means everyone from grandparents to Elite athletes can all train together.
CrossFit is for everyone, from the Special Forces operator over seas conducting missions to the professional athlete needing to get stronger and fitter, to the mum needing to lift the groceries out of the car and keep up with her children running around.
CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program consisting mainly of a mix of aerobic exercise, calisthenics (body weight exercises), and Olympic weightlifting. CrossFit, Inc. describes its strength and conditioning program as "constantly varied functional movements executed at high intensity across broad time and modal domains," with the stated goal of improving fitness, which it defines as "work capacity across broad time and modal domains."
Here at BOP S&C we run hour-long classes that consist of a warm-up, a skill development or strength development portion, a high-intensity "workout of the day" (or WOD), and we finish with period of individual or group stretching.
Performance on each WOD is often scored to encourage competition and to track individual progress, but if members don’t want to worry about scores then they do not have to put theirs up. We also offer additional classes, such as Olympic weightlifting, bodybuilding, and skill workshops, which are not centered around a WOD.
We use equipment from multiple disciplines, including barbells, dumbbells, gymnastics rings, pull-up bars, jump ropes, kettlebells, medicine balls, plyo boxes, resistance bands, rowers, slam balls and various mats. CrossFit is focused on "constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement," drawing on categories and exercises such as these: calisthenics, Olympic-style weightlifting, powerlifting, Strongman-type events, plyometrics, body weight exercises, indoor rowing, aerobic exercise, running, and swimming, the list goes on.
CrossFit programming and general methodology is used by thousands of private affiliated gyms, fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and military organizations including the our very own New Zealand Defense Force, the Australian Defence Force, the Royal Danish Life Guards, as well as by some U.S. military organisations and Canadian high school physical education teachers, high school and college sports teams, and the Miami Marlins.
"CrossFit is not a specialized fitness program, but a deliberate attempt to optimize physical competence in each of 10 recognized fitness domains," says founder Greg Glassman in the Foundations document. Those domains are: cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy.
CrossFit appeals to both men and women alike and a recent statistical analysis showed that CrossFit participants were almost equally 50% male and 50% female.
